Make grit the first thing you tackle.
A suitable entrance mat helps catch dirt before it travels through the house. Clean it regularly, and make sure its backing is compatible with the floor beneath it.
Use the vacuum head or setting recommended for your carpet or hard floor. Check that wheels and brushes are clean, and fit suitable protectors to furniture legs.
Carpet: respond to spills gently.
Lift any solid material carefully and blot liquid with a clean absorbent cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing, which can affect the pile. Follow the manufacturer’s stain guide for the spill and fibre.
Never treat “bleach-cleanable” as a rule for every carpet. It applies only to specified products and methods. Wool needs a different approach, and mixing household cleaners is not a substitute for the recommended treatment.
Wood, laminate & vinyl: use the right method.
Remove loose dust and grit before cleaning. Use the maker’s recommended cleaner and moisture level for that particular finish. Avoid standing water, abrasive pads and unapproved steam cleaning.
Wipe up splashes promptly, including near the edges. The care instructions for one water-resistant product do not automatically apply to another.
Rugs need their own care plan.
Read the label before cleaning, including any instructions for fringe, backing and natural fibres. A suitable underlay helps keep the rug in position; check it will not mark the floor underneath.
Turn the rug periodically where practical so wear and light exposure are shared more evenly. Specialist cleaning may be more appropriate than trying an unfamiliar product at home.
Keep the name of your floor.
Save your range, colour and care leaflet when your flooring is fitted. If something happens later, those details make it much easier to find the right advice.
For a difficult stain or damage, contact the shop with the product name and a photograph before trying stronger treatments.
