The case for wool.
Wool is a natural fibre with real spring. It recovers from furniture and footprints, feels warm and soft, insulates well and ages gracefully. It takes colour beautifully and has a depth of texture that is hard to imitate.
It costs more, sheds a little when new, and needs gentler cleaning. Wool-rich blends, typically 80% wool and 20% synthetic, add strength while keeping most of the feel.
The case for synthetic.
Polypropylene and polyester carpets are inherently stain-resistant, good value and available in a huge range of colours. Some ranges tolerate diluted bleach cleaning, which makes them popular for family rooms, stairs and rental properties.
They are less resilient than wool over many years and can flatten in heavy traffic, so look at pile density and usage ratings rather than just price.

Quiet bedrooms and formal living rooms are where wool rewards the extra spend. Busy family rooms, stairs, children’s rooms and rentals often suit a practical synthetic twist.
Whichever you choose, the underlay and fitting matter as much as the fibre. Compare the whole fitted cost rather than the price per square metre alone.
