What matters here

Comfort first

Most living rooms lean towards carpet for warmth and softness, especially in older stone-built homes around the valley. A good underlay makes as much difference to the feel as the carpet itself.

Traffic through the room

Think about the route from the door to the sofa and out to the garden. A twist pile or a heathered colour hides the wear and marks of daily life better than a very plain, deep pile.

Colour and light

North-facing rooms suit warmer tones; sunny rooms can take cooler greys and greens. Bring a cushion, a paint sample or a photograph and compare them against real samples in the shop.

Common questions

Wool or synthetic for a living room?

Both work well. Wool gives natural texture and resilience; a good synthetic twist is a practical choice where spills are likely. Compare feel, care and the whole fitted cost together in the shop.

Can I put a rug over a new carpet?

Yes, and it is a good way to add colour or protect a well-used spot. Check the rug backing is suitable for the carpet underneath and use a rug underlay if it creeps.
